Bulldogs Fall to Paladins in Final Conference Road Game, 2-1

Greenville, S.C. – The Citadel was unable to hold onto a 1-0 first half advantage as Furman's two second half scores lifted the Paladins over the Bulldogs, 2-1, in the final Sunday afternoon conference battle of the season at Stone Soccer Stadium. The loss moves the Bulldogs' overall record to 4-11-3, with a 2-6-2 conference mark with just one game remaining on the season.

The Bulldogs came out hot in the first half as senior captain Hannah Warne crossed a beautiful pass into the box that pulled Paladin keeper Jessica Smith out of the net and allowed sophomore Jaslene Thiara to tap the ball in for her first goal of the season.

The Citadel would have plenty of opportunities to notch another goal on the board, firing seven shots in the first half, including four off the foot of SoCon shot leader Vanessa Aponte. The sophomore finished the game with eight shots, four of which were on goal.

Sophomore Nicole Levermann, who notched two goals in Friday's 2-2 draw against Wofford, started the second half of Sunday's game and immediately made an impact, firing a laser on net that was nabbed by the Furman keeper, Smith, who recorded eight saves on the day.

The defensive play was handled well on both ends of the field until the 70th minute when Furman midfielder Ali Simpson collected a pass from India Robinson that she drilled into the left corner of the net from 30 yards out to even the game at one goal apiece.

It would take only ten more minutes for the Bulldogs to give up their first half lead as the Paladins leading scorer, Rachel Shelnutt, knocked in her 11th goal of the season from 21 yards out to give Furman a 2-1 advantage.

The Paladins finished out the final ten minutes unscathed and took the win from The Bulldogs, 2-1, to improve their overall record to 10-7-2 with a conference mark of 5-3-2.

The Citadel's second half woes continued as they now hold a record of 4-9-2 when entering the half tied or with a lead.

The Citadel currently sits in 10th place in the Southern Conference standings with just one game left against crosstown rival College of Charleston on Wednesday, Oct. 26 at 3 p.m. on Washington Light Infantry Field.
