Bulldog Soccer Heads to the Upstate to Take on Furman and Wofford
Charleston, S.C. – The Citadel women’s soccer team will hit the road for their final Southern Conference weekend slate of the season. The Bulldogs will face-off against Wofford on Friday, Oct. 21 against Wofford at 7 p.m. on Snyder Field before heading to Greenville, S.C. to close out the road schedule against Furman at 2 p.m. on Eugene E. Stone, III Soccer Stadium.
The Bulldogs (4-10-2, 2-5-1) were downed in two close games last week against Georgia Southern (10/13) where they fell, 2-0, and to Davidson (10/16) where they lost a heart-breaker, 2-1, on a 109th minute overtime goal by the Wildcats. The losses moved The Citadel to six games under the .500 and into a ninth place tie with Wofford in the conference standings.
The Bulldogs’ game with Wofford on Friday night will be the third night game of the season for The Citadel, who hold a 1-0-1 record under the lights in 2011.
On Sunday, The Citadel will take on Furman for the first time since knocking them out of the SoCon Tournament last season on a golden goal in the second overtime off the foot of Vanessa Aponte. The 2-1 overtime thriller was the Bulldogs first-ever conference tournament appearance and win.
The sophomore tandem of Vanessa Aponte and Mariana Garcia have had almost identical seasons, posting six goals, three assists and 15 points apiece for 2011. Garcia was most recently listed as the top player to watch in the SoCon by TopDrawerSoccer.com with her teammate Aponte landing in the ninth spot.
The Bulldogs will close out their conference schedule on Wednesday, Oct. 26 at 3 p.m. against crosstown foe College of Charleston on Washington Light Infantry Field.
