Box Score

Charleston, SC - Elon forward Alisa Petitt scored the game-winner with one minute remaining in overtime to slip past The Citadel 3-2 in Southern Conference women's soccer action Friday night at Johnson Hagood Stadium.

Elon (3-10-2, 1-6-0 SoCon) got on the board first in the 20th minute as Kerri Spears netted her fifth goal of the season to give the Phoenix an early advantage.

The Citadel (2-14-0, 0-8-0 SoCon) answered back in the 27th minute as Maggie Bryan picked up her own deflection off an Elon defender to feed it to Kelly Hasselman for the score. The goal was Hasselman's first of the year as Bryan also picked up her first assist to knot it at 1-1 after the first half.

The Bulldogs jumped on top in the second half as Sarah Burke netted her second goal in as many games to put the Cadets up 2-1. Burke lobbed a ball over the Phoenix keeper from the top of the box for the score. Three minutes later, Elon tied it up again as Tina Longo fired one from 15 yards out unassisted.

The Bulldogs and Elon battled it out through the first overtime with the Phoenix finishing on top as Petitt settled a sharp pass from Emily Chesney for the game-winner with only one minute remaining. The victory marks the first Southern Conference win for the Phoenix this season.

"Though it was a heartbreaking loss, I could not be more proud of our team, particularly our seniors," said head coach Chris Lenzo.

Elon and The Citadel each tallied 26 shots. The Dogs recorded two additional shots on goal with 14 compared to Elon's 12. The two teams were also even in corner kicks on the evening with four apiece.

Phoenix keeper Amy Cahill got the start and made 10 stops, as her relief, Lizz Johnson, recorded two. Ellenwood played 99 minutes and earned nine saves of her own.

The Bulldogs recognized five seniors before the start of the game as Julie Austin, Miriam Crawford, Angie Ellenwood, Megan McAuliffe and Lauren Merchant each participated in their final home game of their careers. Each senior got the starting nod in the contest.

"I have never seen a team play that hard for each other," commented Lenzo. "Today, our seniors left a permanent mark on the soccer program and I fell lucky to have been here to witness it."

The Bulldogs will now take to the road to continue Southern Conference play as they face cross-town rival College of Charleston this Sunday, October 23 at 1 pm. Elon returns home to play host to Georgia Southern also on Sunday at 1 pm.
