Charleston, SC - The Citadel only trailed 1-0 going into the 79th minute, but Coastal Carolina rallied for three goals to defeat the Bulldogs 4-0 Tuesday night at the CCU Soccer Field. Senior Angie Ellenwood tallied four saves in the second half for the Bulldogs in her first appearance at keeper in the 2005 season.
Coastal outshot the Bulldogs 19-2 in the first half, but The Citadel defense kept the score to 1-0 after 45 minutes. Freshman Blair Monroe took a deflected shot and put it past sophomore Brit Bunnell to give the Chanticleers the lead at 19:10. Bunnell had eight saves in the first half.
At 79:05, Monroe took a pass from junior Leah Hackmann and headed it past Ellenwood to make it 2-0. Senior Kristina Fisher then scored her second goal of the year, beating Ellenwood to the left side, with an assist from Monroe. Fifty seconds later, senior Bobbie Parsons collected a rebound and scored to build a 4-0 lead. Coastal outshot the Bulldogs 11-3 in the second half.
"We played well for 85 minutes against a very good attacking team," commented head coach Chris Lenzo. "We just need to learn how to stay strong when we go through a rough patch."
The Bulldogs now own a 2-3 record and will travel to face cross-county rival Charleston Southern this Monday, September 12 at 4pm.
