The Citadel Golf Team Opens Fall Season at the Great Smokies Intercollegiate
Charleston, S.C. - The Citadel women's golf team is set to open the 2010-11 season by heading to Waynesville, N.C. to compete in the 12th-Annual Great Smokies Women's Intercollegiate on September 18-19 with a practice round on Friday, September 17. The event will be hosted by Western Carolina University and will include a combined 24 teams.
The Bulldogs will kick off the season with nine girls on the roster including four freshman and five upperclassmen. Seniors Christine Clark, Kate Hardina and Sheri Rockefeller will lead the Bulldogs as the team welcomes freshmen newcomers Madison Wallender, Alyssa Hunting, Erica Pelligrinni, and Stephanie Simmons.
The Citadel will look to improve from last year as they finished 21st at the Great Smokies Intercollegiate in 2009 through only one day of competition. The second round on Sunday was cancelled due to inclement weather.
The three-day event will take place at The Waynesville Inn Golf Resort and Spa's 27-hole golf course on the Carolina and Blue Ridge courses. The Carolina course plays 2,981 yards with Blue Ridge course playing 2,941 yards. The course consists of three par-3 holes and three par-5 holes to complete the total 5,922-yard golf course designed by Donald Ross who is renowned for designing Pinehurst #2, which hosted the 2005 U.S. Open.
The Southern Conference will bring four teams to the tournament in 2010 including last year's champions Elon and host Western Carolina. The Citadel and Appalachian State will also represent the SoCon this weekend in Waynesville.
