Signing Day Nets 29 Newcomers to Bulldog Football Family

The Citadel Head Coach Kevin Higgins has announced the addition of 29 new football players who will join the Bulldog program in the fall.

The class features nine linebackers, including Hunter Shepherd from Berkeley High School, the lone Charleston area player among the 29. A total of eight states are represented, with 11 coming from Georgia, seven from South Carolina, four from North Carolina, two each from Alabama and Texas and one each from Florida, Pennsylvania and Virginia.

Two of the players - offensive lineman Harrison Davis and defensive lineman Joe Phillips - had fathers who played in the NFL. Kickder Eric Goins (father, Ray) and offensive lineman Sam Frye (brother, Chris) had close relatives who played football at The Citadel.

Koty Allen, DL, 6-2, 215, Marietta, Ga./Walton

Allen was a four-year letterman at Walton High School. He made 85 tackles, including eight sacks, and recorded 18 quarterback hurries during his senior season and was a two-time player of the week as well as an all-county and honorable mention all-state selection. In his junior season he posted 65 tackles and had seven sacks. Walton went 14-1 a year ago, state runners-up and was ranked No. 22 in the nation. He plans on majoring in business.

Caleb Bennett, LB, 6-0, 210, Travelers Rest, S.C./Blue Ridge

Bennett was a two-time team captain and four-year letterman at Blue Ridge High School. He recorded 109 tackles, six tackles for loss and four sacks his senior season and was named all-region and second team all-county. The previous season he made 110 tackles and a pair of sacks and was the team's defensive MVP, received the Elite 11 award and was honorable mention all-county. Blue Ridge went 8-3 in 2011, the team's best record in over 20 years. He plans on majoring in business management.

Busby was a team captain and four-year letterman at Theodore High School. His senior year he rushed for 1,200 yards, averaging better than seven yards a carry, and scored 20 touchdowns to earn a spot on the all-region team. He is planning on majoring in sports management.

Dondray Copeland, DB, 6-2, 190, Doerun, Ga./Colquitt County

Copeland was a two-year letterman at Colquitt County High School. His senior season he intercepted two passes and returned them both for touchdowns while also forcing a fumble. He was a member of team that was the 2010 state runners-up and 2011 squad which advanced to the semifinals. He plans on majoring in electrical engineering.

Joe Crochet, OLB, 6-2, 200, Stone Mountain, Ga./St. Pius X Catholic

Crochet was twice named the team's defensive player of the year at St. Pius X Catholic High School and was all-county and second team all-state his senior season. That year he made 144 tackles, 89 of which were solo stops, made nine tackles behind the line of scrimmage and blocked three kicks. He was a six-time defensive player of the week during his career and finished with a total of 237 tackles. He helped his team go 33-5 in three seasons and earn two berths in the state quarterfinals. He plans on majoring in business.

Harrison Davis, OL, 6-2, 265, Marietta, Ga./Walton

Davis served as a team captain and was a four-year letterman at Walton High School. He was named second team all-state following his senior season. That year, he helped Walton post a record of 14-1, finish as the state runners-up and earn a No. 22 national ranking. His father, John, played eight seasons in the NFL and appeared in three Super Bowls with the Buffalo Bills. He is currently undecided on a major.

Preston Durham, LB, 6-0, 210, Inman, S.C./Chapman

Durham was a team captain and was twice named to the all-region team during his career at Chapman High School. During his three-year career he was credited with 390 tackles. He was also a standout on the wrestling team, qualifying for the state meet while competing on a pair of region championship squads. He is currently ranked No. 2 in his class. He is planning on majoring in biology.

Sam Frye, OL, 5-10, 275, Charlotte, N.C./Providence Day School

Frye was a team captain and started all four years at Providence Day School. He was a member of the all-conference and all-state teams following his senior season and played on a state championship team. During his career he helped pave the way for his team to rush for more than 8,000 yards. His brother, Chris, lettered at The Citadel in 1990-91 and another brother, Orry, started at Appalachian State in 2011. He plans on majoring in political science.

Eric Goins, K, 6-2, 210, Herndon, Va./Oakton

Goins lettered all four years at Oakton High School and made seven field goals, including a long of 46, and was 31 of 32 in his extra point attempts during his senior season. He also had 16 touchbacks on kickoffs and averaged 44 yards per punt. He was named all-district and second team all-region as a senior and was all-district and honorable mention all-region his junior year. His father, Ray, was an offensive lineman at The Citadel from 1981-85. He is currently undecided on a major.

Austin Harrell, LB, 6-2, 235, Adairsville, Ga./Adairsville

Harrell was a team captain and four-year letterman at Adairsville High School. In his senior season he recorded 118 tackles, 18 sacks, four forced fumbles, five pass breakups and scored one touchdown. He was named to the all-area team after being a preseason all-state selection. His team finished 10-2 last season and reached the second round of the state playoffs. He also starred in track and field and was a member of four first place teams in the 4x100 meter relay. He plans on majoring in business.

Emmet Howle, OL, 6-3, 295, Charlotte, N.C./Myers Park

Howle served as a team captain his senior year and was a two-time letterman at Myers Park High School. He had 29 pancakes and 37 knockdown blocks his senior season and was an all-conference nominee while playing on a state quarterfinalist team. In addition to football he also competed on the cross country, track and field, wrestling and golf teams. He is currently undecided on a major.

Mitchell Jeter, DL, 6-0, 270, Rock Hill, S.C./Rock Hill

Jeter served as a team captain and was a four-year letterman at Rock Hill High School. He had a total of 122 tackles, made 17 sacks, forced 10 fumbles and blocked two field goal attempts during his senior season. He was named the Class AAAA Upper State Lineman of the Year and was selected to play in the Shrine Bowl. He also lettered three times in wrestling and was twice named the team's most outstanding wrestler. He plans on majoring in civil engineering.

Austin Jordan, P, 6-0, 200, Columbia, S.C./Airport

Jordan made 12 of 15 field goal attempts over the 2010 and 2011 seasons including 9 of 11 his senior year at Airport High School. He averaged 42.2 yards per punt as a junior and 39.9 his senior year. He was named the High School Sports Report all-state punter in 2010 and was a Ray Guy Prokicker.com honorable mention All-American. He played on Airport teams that won 39 games in four years and went undefeated in 2009.  He plans on majoring in electrical engineering.

Taylor Jurney, OLB, 6-0, 195, Cornelius, N.C./Southlake Christian Academy

Jurney was a team captain and four-year letterman at Southlake Christian Academy. He set a school record with 18 sacks his senior season and had 70 total tackles en route to being named his team's defensive player of the year as well as an all-conference and all-state selection and a member of the Shrine Bowl roster. He helped lead Southlake Christian Academy to a record of 11-2 and a berth in the state semifinals. He plans on majoring in business.

Drew McCluskey, RB, 5-9, 170, Columbus, Ga./Brookstone School

McCluskey earned a total of 11 letters in football, basketball, track and field and baseball during his career at Brookstone School. He rushed for 1,100 yards and 11 touchdowns as a junior, gained 531 yards and scored nine touchdowns in only seven games his senior year and was named to the Bi-City squad both seasons. He plans on majoring in biology.

Vinny Miller, RB, 5-10, 195, North Augusta, S.C./North Augusta

Miller was a team captain and four-year letterman at North Augusta High School. He enjoyed a standout senior season, rushing for 2,704 yards and 40 touchdowns and received numerous postseason awards. He was selected the High School Sports Report Class AAAA-Division 2 Offensive Player of the Year, the South Carolina Region 5 AAAA Offensive Player of the Year and the Augusta Chronicle South Carolina Player of the Year and was chosen to play in the North/South All-Star Game. As a junior he was an all-region selection at both linebacker and punter. He plans on majoring in engineering.

Hunter Morris, LS, 6-2, 240, Mooresville, N.C./A.L. Brown

Morris was a three-year letterman at A.L. Brown High School. He has an average snap time of 0.66 seconds and was selected as the nation's top long snapper by One-on-One Kicking and was named his team's offensive line MVP following his senior season. He was a member of a state runner-up team in 2008 and A.L. Brown won conference championships in each of his four seasons. He plans on majoring in criminal justice.

Te'Myrick Mosley, RB, 5-11, 180, Dunwoody, Ga./Dunwoody

Mosley was a team captain at Dunwoody High School and rushed for 430 yars and 10 touchdowns his senior season while also grabbing seven interceptions and scoring one defensive touchdown. He was an all-county selection and played on a region championship team. He plans on majoring in finance.

Brent O'Neal, RB, 5-10, 195, St. Petersburg, Fla./Canterbury School

O'Neal served as a team captain and was a four-year letterman at Canterbury School of Florida. He rushed for 4,745 yards and 79 touchdowns in his career and averaged 10.5 yards per carry. He was named to the all-county and All-Suncoast teams and was second team All-Big County and second team all-state. He helped lead Canterbury to its first-ever state playoff berth in 2011. He plans on majoring in business.

Ferris Owens, LB, 6-0, 230, Kerrville, Texas/Tivy

Owens was a team captain and three-year starter at Tivy High School. He made 152 tackles and three sacks his senior season while leading the team with three interceptions and was named to the all-area and all-district squads. During his career he earned four area player of the week awards. His team reached the state semifinals in 2008 and 2009 and the quarterfinals in 2011. He plans on majoring in education.

Joe Phillips, DL, 6-2, 260, Washington, Pa./Washington

Phillips was a team captain and four-year letterman at Washington High School. He made 57 tackles, including eight sacks, forced six fumbles and blocked a field goal attempt his senior season and was named all-conference and a member of the Washington Observer-Reporter Elite 11 team. He served as his senior class president. His father, Joe, started 152 games during a 14-year NFL career. He plans on majoring in kinesiology.

Cody Richardson, DB, 5-11, 165, Marietta, Ga./Walton

Richardson was a four-year letterman at Walton High School. In his senior season he made 31 tackles and broke up seven passes on defensive while making 32 receptions for 461 yards and three touchdowns on offense. He also totaled 267 return yards and scored a touchdown. He helped Walton post a record of 14-1, finish as the state runners-up and earn a No. 22 national ranking. He also starred on the track and field team and holds school records in the 4x100 meter relay and the 800 meter sprint medley. He plans on majoring in physical therapy.

James Riley, LB, 5-11, 215, Mobile, Ala./Davidson

Riley was a team captain his senior season at Davidson High School. That year he made 155 tackles, with five coming behind the line of scrimmage, recorded three sacks, forced four fumbles and had an interception. He was named all-region and honorable mention all-state. His team won the region championship and reached the state semifinals his junior year. He plans on majoring in accounting.

Shepherd was a team captain and earned a spot on the all-region team and berth on the North/South All-Star Game roster at Berkeley High School. He recorded 120 tackles during his senior season and was a member of a state championship team in 2009. He also played baseball and was all-region in that sport as well. He plans on being a pre-med major.

Mark Thomas, OLB, 6-2, 200, Brunswick, Ga./Glynn Academy

Thomas served as a team captain at Glynn Academy. His senior season he posted 75 tackles with 15 sacks and was named to the all-region and all-coastal teams. He plans on majoring in engineering.

Julian Walker, QB, 5-11, 180, Pearland, Texas/Manvel

Walker passed for 1,780 yards and 18 touchdowns and rushed for 803 yards and 16 touchdowns his senior season at Manvel High School. He was named all-district and was a two-time Houston area player of the week. He led Manvel to a district championship and a berth in the state title game, finishing the year as the No. 3 ranked team in Texas. In basketball he was the team's defensive player of the year and a member of the No. 2 team in the state. He plans to be a pre-med major.

Kyle Weaver, OL, 6-2, 275, Hilton Head, S.C./Hilton Head Christian Academy

Weaver served as a team captain and earned four letters at Hilton Head Christian Academy. He was the SCISA Defensive Player of the Year and an all-state selection his senior season and was named the No. 1 college football prospect in the state by the SCISA. He was chosen to play in the North Carolina/South Carolina Private School Shrine Bowl and was named the game's defensive MVP. He played on a pair of state championship teams in 2009 and 2011. He plans on majoring in criminal justice.

Trey White, QB, 6-0, 195, Atlanta, Ga./St. Pius X Catholic

White was a team captain and three-year starter at St. Pius X Catholic High School. He rushed for 2,577 yards and 23 touchdowns while passing for 1,555 yards and 16 scores during his career. He was elected his team's offensive player of the year all three seasons as the starting quarterback and was an all-region, all-county and honorable mention all-state choice his senior year. He led St. Pius X to a three-year record of 33-5 and two berths in the state quarterfinals. He plans on majoring in business.

Nick Willis, DB, 6-2, 185, Stone Mountain, Ga./Dunwoody

Willis was a team captain and named his team's defensive back of the year following his senior season at Dunwoody High School. That season he made 80 tackles and picked off three passes, returning one for a touchdown. He played on two region championship teams and one which won a county title.
