Couey, Harland Receive CFPA Honorable Mention Accolades

Charleston, S.C.--Two members of The Citadel Football program, Cass Couey and Rod Harland, were acknowledged for their individual performances against Samford on Nov. 12. Couey and Harland received honorable mention accolades by the College Football Performance Awards (CFPA) as Punter and Linebacker of the Week, respectively, which was announced on Monday morning.

In a nail biting 19-14 loss to Samford last weekend, Couey (Tampa, Fla.) booted three punts for a total of 157 yards (52.3 avg.), including a 61-yard punt, which was his second this season for 60-or more yards. In the process, he became the top punter in the Southern Conference with an average of 42.8 yards per punt. On the Bulldogs opening drive of the game, Couey's 54-yard punt placed Samford at their own 31-yard line. Two plays later a fumble recovery by Chris Billingslea allowed The Citadel to set their offense up at the Samford 38. That drive led to a Ben Dupree one-yard scamper into the endzone to give The Citadel a 7-0 lead.

Harland (Hartwell, Ga.), who finished with eight total tackles (five solo), was the backbone of a Citadel defense that allowed Samford to rush for only 113 yards. He reached quarterback Dustin Taliaferro for one sack and on two separate occasions stopped Samford for losses totaling eight yards behind the line of scrimmage. Harland also recorded his second forced fumble of the season, placing him in a three-way tie alongside Jeremy Buncum and Brandon McCladdie for the team lead.
