Gophers Blank Bulldogs 3-0

Minneapolis, Minn. – DJ Snelten struck out six over 7-2/3 innings and held The Citadel to four hits as Minnesota defeated the Bulldogs 3-0 Saturday afternoon at the H.H.H. Metrodome, clinching the weekend series. The two clubs close out the series with a 1:05 p.m. EST first pitch Sunday afternoon.

Minnesota (11-13) jumped on the scoreboard early, scoring three times in the bottom of the first for the only runs it would need. Troy Larson led off the frame with a full-count walk from Citadel starter Bryce Hines. After Larson stole second, Andy Henkemeyer plated the Gophers' lead-off man with a RBI triple down the right-field line. Dan Olinger followed with a RBI single to right for a 2-0 Minnesota lead. Bobby Juan hit into a fielder's choice, with Olinger retired at second for the first out of the inning. Matt Halloran brought home the third run of the opening frame with a RBI triple to right center, scoring Juan from first for a 3-0 Gophers' lead.

The Bulldogs (9-13) threatened in the seventh as Justin Mackert and Bo Thompson knocked back-to-back singles with one out, but Snelten retired Drew DeKerlegand and Hayden Hendry to end the frame with a pair of Bulldogs on base.

Thompson led the Bulldogs with a solid 3-for-3 effort at the plate, recording three of the four Citadel base hits in the game. Starter Bryce Hines was saddled with the loss, allowing three runs on four hits in 2-1/3 innings with three walks and three strikeouts. Four Bulldog relievers kept the Gophers off the scoreboard the rest of the way, with James Reeves' four strikeouts in 2-1/3 innings highlighting the effort.

Snelten kept the Bulldogs' offense on their heels for most of the afternoon, as the southpaw improved to 2-1 on the season. Kevin Kray tossed a perfect final 1-1/3 innings for his fourth save. Henkemeyer and Michael Handel led the Gophers' offensive attack with a pair of hits each.
