Comeback at Wofford Falls Short for Diamond 'Dogs

Wofford starter Cash Collins attempted to carry a shutout into the ninth inning, but exited the game after giving up a base hit to (Orlando, Fla.), hitting (Cleveland, Ohio) with a pitch and then surrendering a three-run homer to left off the bat of (Winnsboro, S.C.) with one out. John Cornely came into record the final two outs to pick up his third save of the season.
Collins (5-0) picked up the win after hurling 8.1 innings, allowing five hits, three runs, one walks and seven strikeouts. The Terrier southpaw retired 14 Bulldogs in a row at one point in the contest.
The Terriers (12-10, 1-3) got on the board in the bottom of the third off Citadel starter (Sumter, S.C.) when Mac Doyle tripled to right center and scored on an RBI single by Konstantine Diamaduros. Doyle hit a two-run homer to left field in the fourth to boost the Wofford lead to 3-0.
In the sixth, Doyle would hit his second triple of the game, scoring Alex Lee to chase Talley (1-2) from the game. The senior went 5.1 innings, allowing 10 hits, five runs (four earned), four walks and struck out eight. (Coral Springs, Fla.) came on in relief, allowing an RBI single to pinch hitter Clark Wise to score Doyle for a 5-0 lead. Clarkson closed out the game for the Bulldogs, hurling 2.2 innings, allowing two hits, no runs or walks and struck out three.
Friday night's game is the eighth loss in the last nine games for the Bulldogs. It was also the first road game of the season for The Citadel. Leading the way at the plate for the Bulldogs was Ladd, who went 2-for-4 with a three-run homer. Doyle was huge at the plate for the Terriers, going 3-for-5 with three runs, three RBI, two triples and a two-run homer.
