Former Bulldog pitcher Jon Ellis and the San Antonio Missions will challenge for the Class AA Texas League Championship beginning Tuesday night in San Antonio. The Missions, who won the Texas League South Division and swept Frisco in the first round of the playoffs last week, will face the North Division Champion Springfield Cardinals in a best-of-five series.

The Citadel's Zach Brown and Sonny Meade started it all in 2006 as they led the HiToms of the Coastal Plain League to their first Petitt Cup Championship. A new bunch of Bulldog greats continued the success in 2007 as the HiToms recently won their second consecutive CPL Championship.

The Coastal Plain League announced today that Edenton's Brian Conley, Chris Swauger of Thomasville and Gastonia's Seth Waller were named the Rawlings Tri-Hitters of the Week, while Wilson's B.J. Dail and Chris Gloor of New Bern were honored as Rawlings Co-Pitchers of the Week for week nine of action (July 30 - August 5).

The Citadel has ties to two of the four newest inductees into the Charleston Baseball Hall of Fame's Class of 2007. Brown Chosen by San Diego in 2007 MLB Draft
The Citadel first baseman Zach Brown was a 27th round selection by the San Diego Padres on the second day of the 2007 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft. Brown was the 837th overall pick and the second player from The Citadel to be chosen by the Padres in the last three years as former Citadel pitcher Jonathan Ellis is currently with the Double-A affiliate the San Antonio Missions.

The 2007 Citadel Baseball team entered the year with a lot of expectations for the newcomers and relied upon them to fill crucial holes left by many of the graduated seniors in 2006. Freshmen occupied the middle infield and played pivotal roles in the pitching staff as the Bulldogs looked to the veterans to add much needed guidance and experience.

The Citadel catcher Richard Jones was named 2007 Louisville Slugger Freshman All-American as chosen by Collegiate Baseball released Wednesday, June 6. Jones was also tabbed Southern Conference Freshman of the Year and made the 2007 SoCon All-Tournament team in his inaugural season as a Bulldog.

Southern Conference Baseball Tournament Sites Selected
The Southern Conference Baseball Tournament will return to Charleston, S.C. in 2008 before moving to Greenville, S.C. for 2009. The tournament will return to Charleston in 2010, it was announced by Commissioner John Iamarino. On Wednesday, the Southern Conference athletics directors entertained bids from The Citadel for Charleston, the City of Greenville and from the USA Baseball facility in Cary, N.C.

Swauger Named to ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America Team
The Citadel junior left fielder Chris Swauger was named to the 2007 ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America Third Team for his performance on the field and in the classroom. Swauger, who made the Academic All-District Team for the second consecutive season, boasts a 3.92 GPA as a junior and lead the Bulldogs with 15 home runs and four triples on the year.

No. 9 Wofford defeated seventh-seeded The Citadel, 6-2, in their very first meeting in tournament history Friday afternoon in the third round of the Southern Conference Tournament at Riley Park. Eric Sturkie's solo home run in the second proved to be the game-winner as he paced the Terriers with two RBI on the day. The Bulldogs will play the winner of the Elon-UNC Greensboro game Friday night to figure out who they will face Saturday, May 26 at noon at Riley Park.

Seventh-seeded The Citadel downed No. 2 Western Carolina, 7-2, in the first round of double-elimination play in the Southern Conference Tournament Wednesday night at Riley Park. Sophomore hurler Matt Crim tossed seven innings of shutout ball and tied a career-best eight strikeouts while freshman catcher Richard Jones belted his third home run in as many games.

Having dropped two of three games at Furman in Greenville, Coach Fred Jordan's club is seeded seventh in the tournament and will play in an opening round game on Tuesday, May 22, against Davidson at 3:30 pm. Should The Citadel be victorious, then the Bulldogs will face second-seeded Western Carolina at 7:30 pm Wednesday night but should the Bulldogs fall against the Wildcats, then the season is over since Tuesday's games are single-elimination. The double-elimination aspect of the tournament begins Wednesday.

The 25th ranked Cougars improve to 33-10, 14-3 SoCon, while the Bulldogs fall to 24-18, 8-9 SoCon.

Senior right-hander Nick Chigges tossed eight innings and held The Citadel to only five hits to lead No. 25 College of Charleston past the Bulldogs, 7-2, Friday night in Southern Conference baseball action at Riley Park. The Dogs and Cougars each collected seven hits in the contest, but five errors by the Bulldog defense were partly responsible for the 7-2 decision. The Dogs fall to 24-17, 8-8 SoCon while the Cougars improve to 32-10, 13-3 SoCon.

The Citadel clinched their third consecutive Southern Conference series as they defeated Davidson, 9-4, in game three at Wilson Field Sunday afternoon. A six-run fourth paced Charleston Southern to a 9-6 victory over The Citadel in non-conference baseball action Wednesday afternoon at Buccaneer Field. The Bulldogs fell behind, 8-1, in the fourth but chipped away at the Buccaneer lead to pull within three. The Bulldogs came up short in the late innings as they loaded the bases on one out in the eighth and ninth and were unable to push in any runs.

Western Carolina completed the sweep over The Citadel with a 18-3 victory Sunday afternoon in Southern Conference baseball action at Hennon Stadium. The Catamounts (17-11, 3-3 SoCon) put up seven runs in the first inning at WCU starter Corey Martin tossed six innings of one-hit ball to earn his second win of the season in his first start of the year. Sophomore Sonny Meade was responsible for the Bulldogs' (17-11, 1-5 SoCon) three runs with a three-run blast in the seventh.

The Citadel and Western Carolina exchanged leads three times before the Catamounts (16-11, 2-3 SoCon) put up nine runs in the seventh to make the final 12-5 Saturday afternoon at Hennon Stadium. The Bulldogs (17-10, 1-4 SoCon) took a 5-3 lead in the seventh thanks in part to Trey Thomas' first career home run, but could not hold on as the Dogs made two costly errors that allowed five unearned runs in the bottom half of the frame.

A bases clearing triple by Steve Daniels in the ninth proved to be the game-winner for Brown as the Bears defeated The Citadel, 6-4, Tuesday night at Riley Park. The Citadel came from behind to send the game into extra frames, but Virginia Tech came away with a 5-4 victory in 11 innings Friday night in game two of the Homewood Suites Shootout at Riley Park. The Hokies got out of a bases loaded jam five times in the contest, while the Dogs left 21 runners on base for the second time this season.

Sunday?s Game Times Changed in Homewood Suites Shootout
Due to expected inclement weather in the Charleston area, games five and six of the Homewood Suites Shootout on Sunday, Feb. 25 have been moved up one hour. Game five between Va. Tech and Minnesota will begin at 10 a.m., while The Citadel's contest against UNC Asheville will be played 30 minutes after the end of game five at Riley Park.

Minnesota Takes 6-3 Victory over The Citadel in Game Four of the Homewood Suites Shootout
The Citadel dropped 6-3 to Minnesota Saturday afternoon in game four of the Homewood Suites Shootout at Riley Park. Gopher second baseman Derek McCallum went a perfect 4-for-4 on the day as Minnesota out hit the Dogs 14-6.

The Citadel baseball will play host to Virginia Tech, Minnesota and UNC Asheville for the Homewood Suites Shootout this Friday-Sunday, Feb. 23-25 at Riley Park. Minnesota and UNC Asheville make their first trip to Charleston as they have never faced the Bulldogs, while The Citadel will take on the Hokies for the first time since they joined the Atlantic Coast Conference.

The Citadel Downs No. 1 South Carolina, 7-6, in Game Six of The Crab House Shootout Presented by Trademark Properties
The number one team in the nation fell at the hands of The Citadel Sunday afternoon as the Bulldogs downed South Carolina, 7-6, in front of a crowd of 5,055 at Riley Park. Freshman second baseman Bryan Altman led the Bulldog offense as he belted a three-run home run in the seventh to pull The Citadel within one. Freshman reliever Raymond Copenhaver earned his first collegiate victory as he came on in the sixth and shutdown the Gamecocks, allowing only one hit and striking out three.

Citadel First Baseman Zach Brown Named Southern Conference Player of the Week
Senior first baseman Zach Brown was named Southern Conference Player of the Week for the week ending Feb. 19. The Greenville, S.C. native is the first player to receive the league's honor in 2007 as he batted .400 during The Crab House Shootout presented by Trademark Properties and helped lead the Dogs to a 7-6 victory over top-ranked South Carolina.

The Citadel fell to Liberty, 2-1, in a pitcher's dual Saturday afternoon at Riley Park in game four of The Crab House Shootout presented by Trademark Properties. There were only six hits allowed between the two clubs as the Bulldogs were held to under 10 hits for the first time this season.

Junior Conrad Kellahan collected a sacrifice fly to drive in the winning run as The Citadel earned a 7-6 victory over Richmond in 10 innings Friday night at Riley Park in game two of The Crab House Shootout presented by Trademark Properties. Senior first baseman Zach Brown scored the game-winner after leading off the 10th with a triple, while senior right-hander Link Saunders picked up his first victory of the season.

The Citadel to Host No. 1 South Carolina, Liberty and Richmond This Weekend in The Crab House Shootout Presented by Trademark Properties
The Citadel baseball will host the No. 1 team in the nation for the first time in Riley Park when the South Carolina Gamecocks come to Charleston for The Crab House Shootout presented by Trademark Properties. Other tournament participants include the Liberty Flames and Richmond Spiders as all four teams will play in a round-robin style format this Friday-Sunday, Feb. 16-18 at Riley Park.

The Citadel Takes Series with 11-4 Victory Over ETSU
Senior starter Justin Smith notched a career-high 11 strikeouts to help lead The Citadel to their first series win of the season with an 11-4 victory over East Tennessee State Sunday afternoon in the Bulldogs' opening weekend sponsored by Cemex. The right-hander picked up his first win of the year as he threw eight innings and did not allow a single walk in the contest.

Bucs Even Up Series With 5-3 Win Over Bulldogs in Extra Frames
The Citadel came from behind in the ninth to send the game into extra frames but fell, 5-3, to East Tennessee State in 13 innings Saturday afternoon at Riley Park in the second game of the Bulldogs' opening weekend sponsored by Cemex. The Dogs were able to get two on with no outs in the 13th, but Buc reliever Caleb Glafenhein sat down three straight batters to preserve the win for ETSU.

Diamond Dogs Down Bucs, 13-6, in Season Opener
Sophomore catcher Sid Fallaw tallied a career-high five RBI to help lead The Citadel to a 13-6 victory over East Tennessee State in their season opener at Riley Park Friday night. Junior Chris Swauger and senior Zach Brown each tallied two-run home runs while redshirt freshman Bryan Altman scored four times in the contest.

The Citadel opens the 2007 season against East Tennessee State this weekend as they host the Buccaneers for a three-game set Feb. 9-11 at Riley Park. Friday's first pitch is slated for 5 p.m., Saturday's contest begins at 2 p.m., while the Dogs and Bucs will play the series finale on Sunday at 1 p.m.

The Citadel Closer Link Saunders Named to NCBWA Preseason Stopper of the Year Watch List
The Citadel closer Link Saunders is one of 35 players in the country to be named to the preseason Stopper of the Year watch list announced Friday by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association. The senior notched 15 saves in 2006, setting a new single-season record at The Citadel. His 15 stops also led the Southern Conference last season.

Four Diamond Dogs Earn Preseason All-SoCon Recognition; The Citadel Picked to Finish Fifth
The Citadel Baseball was picked to finish fifth in the Southern Conference in 2007 according to a vote of the league's coaches. The Bulldogs also landed four players on the preseason All-SoCon teams, including junior outfielder Chris Swauger who was honored on the first team and led the Bulldogs in eight offensive categories in 2006.

The Citadel Baseball 2007 Season Preview
With the beginning of The Citadel baseball season less than two weeks away, the Bulldogs have their sights set on their first postseason berth since 2004. The 2007 club looks to continue The Citadel's 'Championship Tradition,' but will have to rely heavily on some young talent. The Dogs will look to the guidance of their veterans as top newcomers are going to be depended on to fill the roles vacated by the five starting position players the Bulldogs graduated in 2006. The Diamond Dogs are up to the challenge as opening day inches closer and closer.

The Citadel Baseball Seventh Annual "Meet the Bulldogs" a Success
The Citadel baseball team hosted its seventh annual 'Meet the Bulldogs' Sunday afternoon at Riley Park. Fans were able to get autographs and take pictures, while getting a sneak peek of the 2007 Diamond Dogs squad. Former Bulldogs Chip Cannon (Toronto Blus Jays) and Jonathan Ellis (San Diego Padres) were also on hand to meet and greet with the fans.

The Citadel Baseball was recognized by Baseball America and SEBaseball.com in their pre-season Southern Conference previews. The Bulldogs had five separate players tabbed to All-Southern Conference teams while senior first baseman Zach Brown was named a top SoCon prospect in the 2007 MLB draft.

Chip Cannon took home AFL MVP honors Tuesday at the Winter Meetings, but he's still waiting on a Spring Training call from the Blue Jays. Nevertheless, the slugging first baseman definitely opened eyes by posting Triple Crown-worthy numbers in Arizona.

The Citadel Baseball Lands Four Signees for 2008 Season
The Citadel head baseball coach Fred Jordan announced the signing of four pitchers for the 2008 season. Tye Buckley, Drew Mahaffey, Matt Talley and Asher Wojciechowski all committed to The Citadel baseball team during the early signing period. Three signees represent South Carolina, while the other is a Florida native.
